What I've Seen Recently: Early November - Mid February, 2023-2024
i hope everyone had a good holiday season.
video games
- continuing my string of RPGmaker games, i picked up faraway story and dropped it about 10 hours in. the characters are really simple and there's nothing damningly wrong with it... except the combat, which is just awful. real time action RPG combat in an RPGmaker is not my idea of fun, especially because enemies are SO FAST, it's hard to hit them with magic and elemental weaknesses play a big part in the game. i was actually enjoying some of the other tedious stuff about it like finding stuff to alchemize and then sell over and over, i like a good grind, but the weak and kinda bland story combined with the combat i found kinda awful tipped it over into a DNF for me.
- i fully completed katamari damacy over the new year since i got it as a christmas gift. this was the switch version and a replay for me. man, this game is just the epitome of comfy for me. graphics, music, characters, everything, it's like a warm hug. this time i went through and got all the presents AND all the objects rolled up which i never managed to do when i was younger despite trying. some were so annoying. it's no wonder i never got 100% item percentage when i was younger, there's no way on the good earth i ever would have found the cuckoo without a guide. and god the fucking cow level... absolutely horrid. i'll be going through we love katamari soon-ish and i remember LOVING IT, even moreso than the original, but i don't remember any of the levels too clearly... i'll report back but i doubt it'll disappoint me. i do love katamari after all.
- i've been playing vampire survivors too to get my fix of holocure since i got all the achievements and full unlocks etc for it. i think there's some uh... first is best bias from me? because while i DO enjoy it and it DOES scratch the itch some, i kinda prefer holocure... the thing i miss most is having an ultimate to get me out of a jam, but maybe i just haven't unlocked it yet? finding unlocks in the overworld is kinda an interesting gimmick but it also leads to the game feeling a bit unbalanced if i skip ahead a level. like uh today i unlocked the yellow sign and i DEFINITELY don't think i was supposed to do that yet L M A O. it's not a bad game by any sense of the word! but going back to it from holocure as opposed to going from it to holocure is definitely throwing me for a loop.

- arknights' new event is out. i don't have a lot to say about the story this time, i shamelessly skipped it, sorry. in my defense lone trail is LONG, about 150k chinese characters long iirc, and i was recovering from my illness when dorothy's vision dropped and that's a prerequisite... but yeah. heard good things about it! going to get around to it someday, prommy!
the gravity mechanics are what i really wanna talk about and are pretty damn fun. i like shooting a rock across the field and how they actually are tied into the Lore this time. the secret stages were really interesting too. it's very unusual for arknights to let you directly control an object on screen, not just set your little guys down and let them whack away. it was a good chance of pace! not to mention i got really lucky in the gacha... muelsyse and ho'olheyak both came home in just one pull wtf. i don't have melanite yet at the time of this writing though and she's only a four star? arknights math is wild.
coming back to this after so long, adele is funny because i had terrible luck with that banner. took about 60 pulls to get eyjafjalla the hvit aska and i got swire the elegant wit from a single like 3 days before the end... come to think of it i don't think i read this event either LOL even though eyjafjalla is one of my favorite characters, i'm sorry baby i had Crippling Depression. i hate trials for navigator too i don't think i've gotten a single skin in this mode and i've also been ignoring it... trying to do it for her but it just isn't happening...
oh but i finished my goal of getting every squad the 2nd ending and even got the 3rd ending in is3! that's very exciting... i STILL haven't finished beating big sad lock in is2 on every squad he is so fucking annoying god bless ♥ the 3rd boss in is3 is really fun even though i've managed to cheese ishar-mla pretty much every time i've played lol. goldenglow attack speed up is truly busted in late game extra modes like this. there's a win condition of beating her without having any operators retreat that i haven't managed to clear yet though, i rely on texas the omertosa way too much for early game. gotta come up with a different strat
- genshin impact has finished fontaine... i think? but i've been working on some character stories so i don't need to wait for new content drops to have something to do lmao. i finished yae miko's story quest like 2-3 days ago at the time of writing, and i wasn't impressed. it feels like they had two very different sides and crammed them both into one chapter, with neither side really getting to strut it's stuff. the cutscene where you release all the youkai spirits was nice from a visual perspective, but i was a bit unsatisfied with how it played out... idk i wanted her to be meaner i guess considering the way people talk about her lmao.
lita 4 months later chiming in to commentate that i also finished ayato's story quest and i liked it okay... kinda glad kamaji didn't end up with whatsherface cuz i also ship him with his retainer LMFAO. god ayato is just so fucking bland, i don't know how they managed to drop the ball so hard with him. not a drop of manipulation in that white boy. don't give a fuck what the game says they are telling and not showing. i also did kazuha's quest and completely forgot about it until now despite liking it a lot better?? just goes to show how salty i am about ayato because i still care way more LMFAOOO hell of a drug.
i also hit 700 achievements, that's exciting for my second account! feeling relatively pleased with my progress ngl. right now i'm kinda working on ascending everyone i have, or at least all the 5*s, then i'll start the artifact grind for realsies... yuck but i'm finally doing it lol

- i actually got a good rec from youtube recently! i uh, don't know if anyone here shares my interest in manmade disasters (such as plane crashes and industrial accidents) but i am very much enjoying going through disaster breakdown's backlog. chloe's commentary is very calm and informative while being equal parts sympathetic to all victims of tragedies and critical of mistakes that lead them there. the only thing i didn't love was the cockpit voice recording segments (in general i find directly playing them and things in a similar vein like in true crime very tasteless) but as i'm watching the videos newest to oldest i imagine that's now going the way of the dinosaur. i am very much enjoying her content, check her out if you get a chance! it'd be nice if i could find a similar channel for purely industrial accidents...
- i semi-frequently watch found footage/"i found a spooky game!"/original horror projects on youtube but i don't find any of them really worth talking about... except valle verde, which hasn't gotten an update recently but i recommended to lain so i wanted to say something. goddamn the animations and cg and stuff in this series is just so cool. like i don't think it's 100% period accurate like some of the other comments do but it's SO INCREDIBLY COOL... the voice acting in the 2nd episode was also on point, i entirely believed that was a sentient ai devil who regretted feeding children to The Program, and the mix of culturally appropriate music with spooky video game tunes is entirely unique. like it's not really reinventing the wheel in terms of actual PLOT but the oodles and oodles of talent on display are really a feast for the eyes, and i don't really... need to be shocked and surprised every time but just enjoy something uniquely positively GOOD. i cannot recommend this series enough it's the only series that has actually tempted me by it's patreon. please contemplate even more fucked up tom nook with me thank you.
